Allen L. Smith, Jr., born May 9, 1936, earned a B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University in January, 1959, after which he was employed as a drilling and production engineer by the California Company (now Chevron). He graduated third in his class at LSU Law School in May, 1964, having been elected to the Order of the Coif and Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Honor Society and having served on the LSU Law Review in 1962 and 1963. Upon graduating from law school in 1964, he joined the firm in Lake Charles.
He is admitted to practice in all of the state and federal district courts of Louisiana, in the federal district court in Beaumont, Texas, all of the state appellate courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the American, Louisiana State, and Southwest Louisiana Bar Associations (President, 1970). He is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel (President, 1987- Allen L. Smith, Jr. 88), the Maritime Law Association of the United States, and the Defense Research Institute. Allen Smith has been Guest Lecturer at LSU Law School and is a faculty member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel Trial Advocacy Clinic.
In recognition of his ability as a trial advocate, he is widely sought after for defense counsel seminars and gives unsparingly of his time in Continuing Legal Education seminars on topics including admiralty and maritime law, oil field litigation (onshore and offshore), examination and cross examination of expert witnesses, and presentation of demonstrative evidence.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. 2004 Recipient of Curtis R. Boisfontaine Trial Advocacy Award from the Louisiana Bar Foundation and Louisiana State Bar Association. He has been named in “The Best Lawyers in America” in 2 categories since 1993.
