James R. Nieset, born October
29, 1942, graduated from Tulane
University in 1964 with a B.S. degree
with majors in Physics and Mathematics.
He graduated from Tulane
School of Law in 1967 ranked third
in his class, having been elected to
the Order of the coif and Omicron
Delta Kappa Honorary Leadership
Fraternity and having served on the
Board of Editors of the Tulane Law
Review. After serving for two years in
the Judge Advocate General’s Corp
of the U.S. Air Force, he began the
private practice in New Orleans in
1969 with Chaffe, McCall, Toter &
Phillips and joined the firm in Lake
Charles in 1970 where he is now a
name partner.
He is a member of the Southwest
Louisiana (President, 1993-94),
Louisiana State (Board of Governors,
2004-2006; Treasurer, 2006-2008),
and American Bar Associations and is
admitted to practice in all the state
and federal district courts of
Louisiana, the federal court in
Beaumont, Texas, all of the state
appellate courts, the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the

United States Supreme Court. He is
a member of the International
Association of Defense Counsel, the
Defense Research Institute, the
Maritime Law Association of the
United States. He was Chairman of
the Tulane Associates Program for
the years of 1993 and 1994. He
serves on the Dean’s Council of
Tulane Law School and is a member
of the President’s Council of Tulane
University. He also serves on the
Board of the Tulane Admiralty Law
Institute.
With his background in Physics,
Chemistry, and Mathematics, Jimmy
Nieset is highly regarded for his technical
ability in the defense of a broad
range of product liability, toxic tort,
environmental, and professional liability
cases.
He is the firm’s computer specialist
and serves on the Technology
Subcommittee of the Southwest
Louisiana Bar Association and of the
Louisiana State Bar Association.
He is named in “Best Lawyers
in America”.
